Myopia Management for Your Child
Myopia, also described as nearsightedness, is a common eye condition where distant objects appear blurry and close-by objects are clear. This happens when the eye is elongated or the cornea is abnormally curved.
Myopia has no cure, but there are several ways to manage the condition and slow down its progression. Early detection is critical for reducing your child’s risk of developing high myopia, which can increase their risk of developing other serious eye conditions later in life, so we encourage you to get their eyes checked regularly.
Let us help you manage your child’s myopia and protect their long-term eye health. Schedule an eye exam today.
Request AppointmentMyopia Control: More than Glasses
Effective myopia control goes beyond wearing glasses and correcting blurriness. It starts with addressing the original cause of the condition.
Whether your child’s myopia is caused by an elongated eye or an irregularly shaped cornea, we can help. We focus on preventing myopia progression and helping stabilize eye growth. Our goal is to protect your child’s future vision and long-term eye health.
Request AppointmentScreen Time, Outdoor Time, & Myopia
It’s important to know about the lifestyle factors that may contribute to your child’s myopia risk. Periods of prolonged focus on close-up screens, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers, can contribute to myopia. However, studies have also shown that spending lots of time outdoors can help reduce the risk of your child developing myopia.
So, if you feel your child spends too much time with screens, we recommend incorporating breaks into your child’s screen time and encouraging daily outdoor activity.
Myopia Management Methods
We understand the frustrations and lifestyle limitations your child may be experiencing from myopia. Whether they struggle to see the whiteboard during class or miss out on certain activities due to blurry vision, we are here to help. We want your child to have a good quality of life supported by clear vision—now and in the future.
We offer a variety of treatments to help manage your child’s myopia and will work closely with you to determine the right treatment for your child.
Corneal Topography
Corneal topography is a noninvasive diagnostic technology that produces a detailed map used to measure the shape and curvature of the cornea with high accuracy. This tool is a critical aspect of myopia diagnosis. We use that data to assess the severity of your child’s myopia and determine a suitable treatment option.
Atropine Eye Drops
Atropine eye drops temporarily paralyze the muscle that focuses the eye to prevent the eye from lengthening. This helps slow down the growth of the eye and can prevent myopia from progressing further.
Multifocal Contact Lenses
Multifocal contact lenses are designed to help people see clearly at different distances, but can also help with managing myopia in children.
Multifocal lenses have multiple different focusing powers in a single lens. The center of the lens corrects nearsightedness, helping your child see clearly at distance, while the outer part of the lens helps slow down the growth of the eye to reduce myopia progression.
Ortho-K
Ortho-k, or orthokeratology, is a type of contact lens designed to reshape your child’s cornea while they’re sleeping. These lenses are specifically designed to change the shape of the cornea. This helps correct nearsightedness, so your child can enjoy clear vision during the day without glasses or regular contact lenses, and can also help slow myopia progression.
